In French Polynesia, between Moorea and Tahiti, daily maritime traffic can pose a threat to marine mammals by causing collisions. To mitigate this risk, the Oceania association has implemented the "Sanctuary Watch" program. Since 2019, Marine Mammal Observers have been trained to detect cetaceans aboard ships. These observations are directly transmitted to ship captains to reduce the risk of collision. The data is also referenced in the OBSenMER database, enabling the association to conduct scientific studies on the cetaceans frequenting the waters along the shipping route between Tahiti and Moorea.
